Explanation:
Tracking of milestones over time can help to give insights to the forecast outcomes. In the example below we can see the forecast end date is rising further into the future each month as the project progress percentage drops due to additional scope being added. All the while we see that there has been a shortening of the planned duration.
Actions:
- In this scenario we would first confirm that the dropping project progress percentage is a result of additional scope and not delays.
- We would also ask if it was intended to shorten the duration of the works and that the intention was to try and do more in a shorter time frame.
- These two points would then lead you to look at the driving path analysis which would show that the forecast ended date has increased due to a more complex schedule that is planning to do more works concurrently in a shorter time. This approach makes delays more probable due to the higher uncertainty associated with working this way.
